Day 4 & 5 - London - Amsterdam

We travelled from London to Amsterdam very early starting at 4a. It was 11pm California-time so we felt ok. Our new hotel was fantastic! It normally costs 300 Euros a night and we stayed for 2 nights, the included 2 breakfasts we had costs 30 Euro per meal and worth every penny! Of course everything was included in our package so we basically got everything half off through our travel company Trafalgar.

We went through a guide tour of the canals and the red light district where we learned about the history of how it all began. Amsterdam was built on water and every square inch is expensive because they literally have to create land to build on. Many of the buildings are very old and tend to lean into one another due to the underground shifting of the man made foundation over the water. The canals all smelled very clean because they are constantly being "refreshed" with the nearby salt water from the ocean. We visited just after the King's Day celebration and the big soccer win which created some excitement in the city streets. The city is always maintaining the buildings, streets and canals with constant renovations so as to keep everything safe and secure.

The Red Light District... The last time I took a picture here I was beaten over the head and my camera was stopped into the ground! I didn't know you weren't suppose to take pictures of the perdy ladies in the windows... This is not allowed. We had a marvelous Dutch guide named "Lanika" but she told us if we couldn't remember that than we could call her "Heniken" :) She fearlessly led our group of 20+ through the chaos of the busy streets talking to us through walkie talkies with headphones so we could hear her every word within a block radius. We passed all the marijuana filled coffee shops, massive snack shops with giant displays of decadent pastries, pizzas, etc for the late night snackers. We passed through tiny alleys on cobblestone streets that we could barely pass through. We walked past the small glass windows containing Red Light Ladies of the Night in their UV hot pink lit rooms which illuminated their brightly colored lngerie which glowed neon colors. It felt a bit like we were in a haunted house with strangely lit creatures lurking around every corner. We watched as groups of guys pushed their friends into these rooms while shouting "happy birthday!" Our guide told us that the Dutch look at these women as doing a public service as they started by offering the sailors who ported there years ago many of whom had been away for many years, holding up lanterns from the land so the ships could see them as they sailed in. Flash forward a few hundred years, the Red Light District Escorts take in men of all psychologies and statures sometimes even keeping the psychos from raping women by providing this service. The Red Light District has churches and schools on the same block as marijuana cafés and prostitutes. It is widely accepted by the Dutch people that this is all just a part of life and should not be hidden, and even regulated as any other legit business.

The next morning we went to a Dutch farm where they made fantastic traditional cheeses and wooden clogs and we also visited the small seaside picturesque and traditional village of Volendam on the Ljsselmeer where we did some shopping. We had Dutch pancakes called Poffertjes, drizzled with chocolate syrup and powdered sugar. It was in this village that I experienced a local Dutch girl's dry sense of humor when I asked where the bathroom was and she pointed to the sea saying "over there" with a straight face.

In the afternoon, we walked downtown for an incredibly lunch at The King's Day Carnival where I bravely ventured on a haunted house roller coaster ride that turned out not to be thrilling at all. I was poked three times in the belly by the Grim Reaper dude as I exited the ride, that was probably the scariest part of the ride.

That night, we went to one of the oldest Dutch restaurants in the area which served basically the same menu as they did 400 years prior. The building was an old Dutch house with dark wooden walls, lots of paintings and very steep stairwells primary because the buildings are tall and narrow. We had prearranged three course meals with unlimited wine that flowed nicely as did the conversations with our fellow travelers. The waitstaff still dressed in the same red and black attire as was depicted in the many old paintings throughout the building. The food was amazing as was the service, I'm so glad we went!

Kevin, our travel guide. Based in the South of France, he travels throughout Europe 200+ days a year showing travelers the insiders scoop for each country. He has given numerous helpful tips saving us a lot of time and frustration and allowing us to focus on having an amazing vacation. Thanks, Kevin!

Day 1, 2 & 3 - London

Traveling from SFO to London of course we lost a day... Arriving in London during the morning rush hour gave us an interesting perspective of what it would be like to live  and work there. We crammed into the "tube" along with hundreds of early rising commuters all smelling of freshly applied product, perfumes and colognes trying not to make eye contact though faces were only inches away from each other.

We missed our stop due to the overcrowding but managed to find our way to the Ibis Hotel by asking a few nice  for directions along the way, 1.5 miles of walking with all of our bags. Great exercise!

We slept off the jet lag then headed to the famous music venue the "Troubadour" where many famous musicians have played from Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix to Adele (you can find one of her earliest performances from there online). We happened upon an amazing singer-songwriter show which featured up and coming talent Annie Afrilu &
Tom Figgins.

We figured out and quickly got addicted to the London Tube public transportation.  We zipped underground here and there checking off our London bucket list 1) St. Paul's Cathedral - we climbed about 600 steps to the top!! 2) Buckingham Palace - we saw the changing of the guard and masses of people 3) we hit a popular strip where we hit some casinos and passed lots of theaters.  I strongly advised the download and usage of the official visitors guide to London FREE app that allows you to pre-plan your destinations and routes with a built in GPS system that does not require wifi so you will not incur any gross data usage charges. http://www.visitlondon.com/traveller-information/getting-around-london/london-maps-and-guides/apps/london-official-city-guide-app

After London, we took the ferry to Calais from Dover where saw the white cliffs (many rivers to cross... Jimmy Cliff song reference) and also did a bit if gambling in the on board slot machines room named "Vegas" and to our surprise we actually won a substantial amount in Euros which meant even more in USD!! We had a large English Breakfast which turned out to be too large and when we asked for a to go box, we were laughed at by the kitchen crew who obviously never hears that one, they have us foil and we took our sausage and bacon and beans for later though there is so much food everywhere and our fridge in the hotel said no perishables because the temperature was not cold enough :) ok so we are wasting a bit of food on our holiday, but we are not trying to.

Just Awoke From My Dream Last Night

In my dream, I was asked to perform at a large music festival. There were people as far as he eye could see. The announcer came on and talked a bit about this, that and the other and then he called my name to perform. I tried my guitar but no sound came out. At the same time, my microphone kept slipping down the stand further and further. At this point the MC, his assistant and I all got into heated troubleshooting debates about how to fix the situation (which clearly i was somehow being blamed for). The mics were on capturing the situation and the whole festival could hear us arguing. I asked him to mute the mics to avoid further embarassment but it was too late. I was mortified. This went on for what seemed like forever. My set was almost over and I hadn't even played a single song. I woke up after that feeling very frustrated. What do you think it means?

Well Hello 2014!

After a week away from home I am glad to be back in the bay although I had tons of fun up north with my folks in Cottonwood, California.

We chillaxed, played music, watch movies, played boardgames, hit the casinos, hung out with their many animals and ate and ate and ate.

I was excited to sit in with my parents' band (The Pine Dogz Band) up in a small old gold mining town called the French Gulch.

The place is said to be haunted as well as there are still bullet holes in the walls from the Wild West days and lots of antiques. Our friend even caught some strange lights in her camera and felt a definite presence. I will try to get the video from her camera...

Looking forward to a new year of friends, family, music, love and travel! Aaron and I will be in Europe in the spring we are so excited!

Lots of love to you all and be well :-) chow 4 now

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

We are nearing the end of 2013 and I am once again looking back at my year as a whole to reflect on the many moments I have been blessed to have received. I am grateful for all the wonderful people in my life and many of whom I do not express my love for enough. To all of you, my friends and family, I want to tell you now how amazing you are :) I HEART YOU!

Also I have a roof over my head and food in my belly (too much most times) and I am healthy and get to do what I love most. These wonderful gifts are much more than many others have throughout this planet and I am extremely grateful.

Music for me has been a constant force in my life. A living, breathing entity that has at times taken over completely and at other times lay dormant and sleeping like a dragon in the night. Because there are always so many things to do in my day to day life, I don't allow myself to simply be... well... simple. To create great music it takes living in the moment and capturing that moment only. I must remember that as my super-virgo-multitasking-must-do everything all at once right now persona kicks in. Bruce Lee said it best when he said "I do not fear the man who does 10,000 kicks once I fear the man who does 1 kick 10,000 times." I believing he was telling me to practice more.

Ahhhhh consistency, my old friend and nemesis. I suppose I am already listing my resolutions for next year (wait I wonder what mine from last year were?). Since I don't remember, all I can do is make a rough guesstimate..... Probably, make more music, finish video projects, exercise more, eat better, lose a few lbs,  make more dough... same ole' same ole :)

I know I want to give back more next year though and to do so in 2014 I am pairing up with some other singer-songwriters to put on a few concerts benefiting some of our favorite charities. Chickapalooza 2014! More on this later as we get exact dates and locations.

Last Night I Found Time-Machine

It's weird how some people can appear from our pasts in our dreams. Even those who technically don't even exist anymore. And it all seems so real. Even the person who whee-lied off of a 2-story high structure on a small tractor only to bounce off the dirt like somebody doing  a BMX bike trick of Tigger from Winnie the Poo. Boing, boing, boing.

I enjoyed seeing the familiar faces again of people I once considered family after all they did take me in as their own; they and a few others. I cannot ever forget that. I've had a lot of love shown to me over the years. Perhaps this was the reason for this dream? Maybe now I am suppose to reach out to them? At least with a holiday card or a FB poke.

It was all in my imagination and I created a very cool Flea Market / Expo where there were little dress shops all sorted by decade: 20's-00's. I was looking at all the sequined items from the 80's along with some odd looking white pointed boots. There were a lot of bridal parties also scouring for maid of honor dresses.

I saw an indoor massage parlor (one of my friends said she wanted to work there, no idea why), lot's of outside vendors selling knick-knacks and bric–a–brac, etc. and a decent band performing. The singer reminded me of Selena. Not Selena Gomez but Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, the beautiful Latina singer who was ruthlessly killed in 1995. The band was entertaining. Of course I put on my booking hat and tried to find out who was hiring bands to play there in hopes of booking my own. I asked around a bit but could not get a straight answer.

I moved on to the indoor arena where most of the action was. There was a fighting ring with people standing around shouting and yelling. It was where all the men were while the ladies poured through the shops. Though I've never been to a live professional fight, I have seen many unprofessional street fights back in my school days (have been in a few myself) as well as have seen some on TV. Nothing would've prepared me for this one though.  I moved my way along the parameter to get a better look while trying to stay out of people's way. These guys were very pumped up and full of testosterone.

Out of nowhere, the fighters came off the stage and were fighting right next to me! I ducked and dodged as they swung in my direction. Their reach was so much more exaggerated than it should have been. Their arms flew out at least 10 ft in any direction. The excited crowd moved away to avoid being hit as the punches flew.

In my dream, I found Aaron and told him about what happened. I woke up to him sleeping next to me. He always tells me to write down my dreams so here I am. Sweet dreams.
